So I have been seen by my OB’s nurse practitioner up until today. Now that I’m 36 weeks I’ll see the OB himself once a week. Well today my husband took time off of work to come meet the doctor and we wanted to discuss our birth plan. The doctor said he refuses to discuss birth plans because he’s “delivered thousands of babies and this is only my first child so what do I know other than what I’ve read in the books.” I was shocked and appalled at his rudeness. He was rushing out the door and wouldn’t even give us a chance to discuss our preferences with him (we also made it very clear that we were willing to adapt to the situation as necessary and understand that some medical interventions are done because its what is best for the baby and mother). This followed a very rough pelvic exam to feel my cervix and the baby’s station. ((I’m not dialated any and the baby is still very high.)) Needless to say I am searching out a new OB, which is a daunting task at 36 weeks pregnant and I’m feeling emotionally overwhelmed by all of this.

Did any of you need to switch doctors this late in your pregnancy? Did it work out well for you?

Also, I know pelvic exams are uncomfortable but are they usually painful this late in the game? I was having pain in my urethra for about 2 hours after he examined me – is this normal?

Thanks for your help! I’ve been so worked up all day about this.
